everything that matters

It's the first spring! So let's sing!

I know that Chris has posted a previous piece on Yeasayers, but I thought this song was perfect to bring in the new year and leave the one that will soon pass. I would deffinitely say that "All our Cymbals" was one of my favorite albums this year. The unrelenting change in writing style as well as the almost traditional Indian influences really make this album stand out. Each members aspiration for originality and change shines through each track as the album progresses, but still not taking away from the "style" of the band; a style which cannot be categorized. This is the perfect album and the perfect single (2080) to bring in the new year and to do some of that soul searching that everyone is always talking about. Happy New Year everybody! Peace.

-Mike and all of us here at Sanorashine.

p.s. make a new years resolution to tell more to come stop by and get learned.

Belle and Sebastian's Christmas cheer

Photobucket

I know it's a day late but it's never too late to feel that good ol' Christmas spirit; I know I'm just chock full of it. Belle and Sebastian have decided to release their own version of "Are you coming home for Christmas." So on behalf of myself and the rest of us here at Sanora Shine. We all hope your holidays went well. Peace.

veni vidi vici

Just thought I would stop in and share the video for Black Lips' song "Veni Vidi Vici" from their album Good Bad Not Evil. This video was shot on Super 8 film capturing moments of the band in various places around Atlanta. This venture takes them to a cemetary which is kind of weird but it's cool to push the envelope every now and again. The video bares various religous symbols on flags, which go along with its political message which I wont bother to go into detail about; interpret it as you may. Regardless, this is still a great video as well as a great song so enjoy. Peace

R.I.P. Ike Turner

This has truely been a week of constant news. First Pimp C passes and now the rock'n'roll pioneer, r&b legend, passed away at his San Marcos, California home on 12/12/07. Aged 76, he reportedly died in his sleep. Though we all know the stories of violent incidents occuring between singer and ex-wife Tina Turner, let us not forget his influential standing. we should also not forget the fact that he was an amazing guitar player. Here is a video of the song "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Remember the good times. Peace

Add Color Here

So I know this isn't the first post I've put up with Daedelus but this song and video are just too good to not share. I'm sure everyone who listens has heard the new Daedelus album Fair Weather Friends so I need not inform you of how good it is. This video and song will definately add some color to all of those who are in college and have just finished finals. School is over, so its time to unwind for a month. Let's start off with this song. Peace.

Hip to the Hippos

Just thought I would stop in and let you guys know about a very good band with a peculiar name. Videohippos is a band that produces music that you might find in a remake of a Street Fighters video game from the old Nintendo console-the fight scenes mainly. I would suggest that all of you go out and check out their new album released this year called Unbeast the Leash. But first, you need to check out the video of "Narwahls" which is a song on the album. The name alone should make you want to check it out-who doesn't love narwahls? Its as if a dolphin type mammal and a unicorn mated and created a narwahl. But I'm no zoologist so don't take my word for it. Anyway, let's get back on track. This is one of the best songs on the new album, which is saying a lot because the whole album is amazing. Go Go Go. Peace.

R.I.P Pimp C

Pimp C, legendary rapper/producer of Houston-based rap duo UGK, was found dead in a Hollywood hotel room this morning. According to TMZ "L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed."

And Jive records has issued the following updated statement:
"It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). Jive Records' President and CEO Barry Weiss states: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Butler's father was a trumpet player who played professionally with Solomon Burke. Outside of his father, the 33-year old rapper's influences varied, ranging from Bobby Bland, Jimmy McGriff, the 1960's Motown artists to Run DMC. Butler met his inseparable partner Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in high school where they formed UGK. In 1992, the duo signed to Jive Records and went on release a total of eight albums for the label. They earned their highest achievement earlier this year when their most recent album, UGK (Underground Kingz), debuted in the number one position on the album pop chart. According to the New York Times, UGK "helped inspire a generation of Southern hip-hop stars, from OutKast to Lil Wayne."

Prehistoric Jamboree

Dinosaur Jr. is coming to Emo's in Austin on December 7th. I expect to see all of your smiling faces at the show. Granted I've seen none of your faces, nor do I know how many people read this blog; it should be thousands in my opinion. Anyhow, for those of you who need reminding, here is the video of "Fury Little Things" from the album You're Living All Over Me to get those juices flowing. So go to the show and have a good time; I know that there shouldn't be anything more important happening on that day to prevent you from going to the show. It should be a prehistoric jamoree!!! Peace.

Visual Visual Visual

Along with the amazing line-up at FunFunFun Fest there was MGMT. I'm not really good at classifying music so I will just put it into the category of "Good."--sounds about right. MGMT is Andrew Vanwyngarden(guitar and singer) and Ben Goldwasser (keyboards); two undergraduates at Wesleyan University in 2002 who began playing music together without the intentions of going anywhere with it. Their music caught the attention of some NYU students, who created the independent Cantora label to release MGMT's EP, Time to Pretend. The band has just released their full length album in October. So I suggest you spend your money on something worth while, put the Xmas gift buying on hold. While you save that money, check out the song "Kids"--the video will let you know the name. I personally feel it is the most visually stimulating video of the year, and the song is great. Enjoy. Peace.
